Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019 includes the essential applications for students and casual users who don’t need advanced business features. This suite includes Word for creating documents, Excel for managing and calculating intense sets of data, and PowerPoint for putting together presentations. The suite also comes with OneNote, a powerful note-taking application that can compile text, audio and images into organized collections. It also provides a way to keep notes for projects, assignments and research in a single location without having to worry about losing or forgetting them.
The suite runs on Windows 10 or macOS. In addition, it has updates to help you work more efficiently with the Surface pen and other devices. Microsoft Translator was added, making it easier to convert languages, and Ink support has been improved so that you can turn shapes into formulars. Microsoft has also made improvements to many of the individual programs, for example Word now encrypts untrusted documents, while Outlook now supports more email clients.
There’s one important distinction to make between this version of Office and the 365 version: With a yearly subscription, you get the most recent updates from Microsoft as soon as they’re available. If you don’t want to pay a monthly or annual fee, you can still purchase Office 2019, but it won’t be automatically updated.
It can be tricky to figure out which version is best for you. Office 365 is designed for people who want to be constantly using the latest version of the suite, but many people don’t need or want that. If you need a few programs but don’t want to be tied into a subscription model, then Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019 might be the right option for you.

This version doesn’t include all the programs that come with 365, but it does include the flagship core applications. It’s aimed at casual home users and students, with the exception of Outlook. It also doesn’t have the slick collaboration and web app capabilities of the 365 version, but it does give you a full suite of desktop apps for one PC.
The only reason to opt for this version is if you don’t want to subscribe to a yearly subscription or if you already have another version of the suite installed on your computer. It’s more expensive than the 365 version but it doesn’t require an ongoing payment. This makes it a great choice for those who don’t have any plans to upgrade in the near future. However, if you want to be able to use the apps on multiple PCs or on the go, you’ll need a subscription to 365. If you don’t, then consider other options, such as Google’s web app suite which gets you all of the same programs for free.
